You'll need the following: A long handled scrub brush, a wheel brush, a detail brush, tire cleaner, 1/4 strength degreaser, and a hose with spray nozzle. I always start on the front wheel and on the left side with the wheel turned to the right so the left side of the wheel faces an upward angle. |
Spray the sidewall with tire cleaner and the entire wheel and calipers or gears with 1/4 strength degreaser. Scrub the sidewall with the long handled scrub brush and spokes, calipers, and hub with the wheel brush. Use the detail brush for where the axle meets the forks. |
For wheels with painted finishes or aluminum wheels with heavy dirt you may need to use a scrubber pad, just don't apply pressure when cleaning with the scrubber pad. Use the spray as you scrub method. Never use Brillo Pads, steel wool (unless it's 0000 grade), or any wire brushes as they will scratch. Dirt will come off, it just may take a bit of patience to be removed. |
Use the wheel brush to get in and around the calipers and between the forks and the wheel. Rinse the wheel with water until all cleaner is off wheel. Now turn handlebars to the left so the right side of the wheel angles up and repeat the process. |
Everything is the same for the rear wheel. The only difference is the rear wheel is blocked in a few spots by the frame. You'll have to use a scrubber pad and slide it in to hit these spots. If you don't than the wheel will have a spot that will look stupid when the wheel spins. Scrub the gears and shocks also, along with the wheel, for the springs in the shocks use a paint brush to get inside the coils. |
